Robert George Buehler was an active member of the Monroe Swiss
Singers, the Männerchor New Glarus and the New Glarus Yodel Club, right
up until the time of his passing on Tuesday, November 20, 2001. A
strong voice in the bass section, Bob was a great joke and story teller,
an instinctive leader and organizer, and dependable and loyal to a fault.
He was an avid sports fan, and particularly loved bowling and golfing.
Born July 14, 1916 in Monroe to Samuel and Margaret Voelkli Buehler, Bob graduated from Monroe High School in 1934. On September 28, 1941, he married Helena Glauser, who is also a member of the Monroe Swiss Singers.
During WW II, Bob served in the US Army's Signal Corp, the source of many of Bob's stories. Following service, he worked at the Swisconsin Cheese Company in New Glarus for five years, and then was general manager of the Monroe Country Club for 21 years. He later worked for Dearth Chrysler-Dodge Motors in Monroe.
Music was a big part of Bob's life. In addition to rediscovering his Swiss heritage through Green County's Swiss singing groups, Bob was also a member of St. John's UCC Sanctuary Choir for over 60 years, and a member of the United Singers, a group of singers from area United Church of Christ congregations.
He was also a member of the Monroe Lions Club and the Zilmer-Riley American Legion Post #84. In 1980 and 1982, Bob was a chairman of Green County Cheese Days, and in 1984, he and his wife, Helena, reigned as Cheese Days King and Queen. That same year, Bob was honored by the Monroe Jaycees as Monroe's Outstanding Senior Citizen. For many years, Bob served as treasurer of the Turner Hall Club in Monroe. In addition to being a loyal husband, Bob was father to two daughters, and grandfather to two granddaughters.
Bob was a strong presence among us, and his absence will be felt for a long time to come.
